Umpire struck by liner in Indians-Reds game

GOODYEAR, Ariz. -- In a scary incident during the Reds' 5-4 walk-off win over the Indians on Monday, third-base umpire Brad Myers was hit by a line drive and had to be taken off of the field on a medical cart.

Myers was taken to an area hospital for further tests.

In the bottom of the second inning, the Reds' Brandon Phillips scorched a line drive between second and third base where Myers was stationed as part of a three-man crew. Myers attempted to jump over the liner, but was struck in the groin area.

Myers stayed down for several moments while both clubs' trainers tended to him and players stood by. Play was halted for approximately nine minutes before Myers got up to his feet and was taken off the field. He tipped his cap as the crowd applauded.

"They're in a vulnerable spot out there," Indians starting pitcher Corey Kluber said. "You see a lot of times, they're just able to get out of the way. That one was just kind of one of the balls that chased him, I guess."

The second inning and the top of the third were completed with a two-man crew. Myers was replaced on the field by the replay umpire, John Tumpane, by the bottom of the third inning. Major League umpire supervisor Randy Marsh replaced Tumpane for replays.
