Call upheld in ninth of Rays-Blue Jays contest

A close play at first base was upheld by the new instant replay system Friday in the Rays' 6-3 victory over the Blue Jays in Dunedin.

The Jays were trailing, 6-3, with a runner on second base and one out in the bottom of the ninth inning, when infielder Munenori Kawasaki was called out at first base after hitting a ground ball to first baseman Cameron Seitzer. Seitzer had fielded the ball and flipped to pitcher Matt Andriese, who had raced over to cover the base and arrived almost simultaneously with Kawasaki.

After a brief review, the umpiring crew upheld the original call for the second out of the inning. Following the play, Steve Geltz came on in relief of Andriese and struck out Kenny Wilson to end the game.
