Everything old is new again.

The Frederick Keys were established in the Carolina League in 1989 as the Class A Advanced affiliate of the nearby Baltimore Orioles, bringing Minor League Baseball to Frederick for the first time since 1930. In 2020, after 31 seasons, the Keys were moved to the Draft League as part of a larger re-organization of Minor League Baseball.

As of 2026 the Keys are back where they started, playing as the High-A affiliate of the Orioles (though this time around they are members of the South Atlantic League). In a corresponding move the Orioles' former High-A affiliate, the Aberdeen IronBirds, took the Keys' place in the Draft League. Both the Keys and the IronBirds are owned by Attain Sports, whose portfolio also includes the Orioles' Double-A affiliate, the Chesapeake Baysox.

Through these various chapters of the franchise's existence, Harry Grove Stadium and the Keys' name has been a constant. The ballpark is named after a co-founder of the Frederick Hustlers, the city's first Minor League team, which played its first season in 1915. (The Nymeo Field portion of the name was added prior to the 2014 season.) The Keys' moniker, meanwhile, is a reference to "Star Spangled Banner" author Francis Scott Key, who is buried in a cemetery located across the street from the ballpark. The team unveiled updated logos prior to the 2026 season, celebrating their return to the affiliated ranks while emphasizing literal keys.

The Keys were welcomed back into the affiliated fold in conjunction with an extensive renovation of Harry Grove Stadium. The improvements largely focused on the player development side of the equation, with major components including new clubhouses, batting cages and bullpens. Fans, meanwhile, have been treated to an expanded concourse and new seating areas.

The ballpark retains an intimate feel, however. The seating bowl extends just past first and third-base, with an open concourse located directly behind it. There you can find the usual accoutrements of a Minor League facility: restrooms, concession stands, the team store and more.

Harry Grove Stadium's location was dictated in no small part by its proximity to I-70/I-270, which runs just south of the ballpark. Downtown Frederick is situated to the north. Weary travelers receive a morale boost upon arriving, as parking at the facility is free. Don't lock your keys in the car, as you'll need them during the seventh inning stretch. Following "Take Me Out to the Ballgame," fans sing along to the team's "Shake Your Keys" theme song while literally shaking their keys.

An added bonus? On fireworks nights, Kooz the Hot Dog Man runs onto the field and throws hot dogs to the fans. It's a time-honored tradition.

Concessions

Maryland is crab country and Harry Grove is Keyote country. Combine regional specialty and team mascot and you get the Keys' signature Keyote Dog, a frankfurter topped with crab mac 'n cheese. Get that at Dugout Dogs, or visit one of the other concession stands and carts for a wide array of ballpark favorites. Dessert comes courtesy of South Mountain Creamery, locally famous ice cream purveyors.

TapHouse

The 4 1/2 Taphouse, located along the third-base concourse and named after the number of innings required for a game to become official, features two dozen taps dedicated to Frederick County breweries. It goes without saying that Frederick County has a robust craft beer scene. Keep an eye out for selections from ballpark favorites Brewers Alley and Bentztown.

Mascot

Frederick's mascot is a coyote named Keyote, and he's been a Harry Grove Stadium fixture for decades. Keyote rarely retreats to his den, instead preferring to mingle with the masses from the first pitch to the final out.

Local Attractions

Team namesake Francis Scott Key is buried across the street from the ballpark, within Mt. Olivet Cemetery. Plan accordingly if you're visiting prior to a ballgame, as the cemetery's 40,000+ graves are spread out over approximately 130 acres of land. While you're there, try to find the grave of ballpark namesake Harry Grove.

Longtime Keys fans may remember that, in 2014, mascot Keyote was "held for ransom just as the city of Frederick was back in 1864 when Confederate General Jubal Early and his troops occupied the city." Let this promotional stunt serve as a reminder that there is a lot to explore in the area when it comes to Civil War history. Explore Frederick County's Civil War Trails, and make time to visit the National Museum of Civil War Medicine. If you still haven't seen enough, drive north and you'll be in Gettysburg before long.

Food and Drink

Downtown Frederick, located approximately a mile north of the ballpark, is chock-a-block with food and beverage options. There should be something for all price ranges and palates, in both downtown and the surrounding area.

As the selection at the Keys' 4 1/2 Taphouse makes clear, there are plenty of breweries in the area as well. One obvious starting point is Frederick's Carroll Creek Brewing District, where several are clustered in close proximity to one another.

Where to stay

There are many hotel options located near Harry Grove Stadium, with many clustered to the south along I-270. Bigger spenders may want to seek out a bed and breakfast in downtown Frederick. Rugged individualists can find an abundance of camping and cabin options as well.

Moving On

When it comes to proximity to the parent club, no organization can top the Baltimore Orioles. Frederick is only an hour away from Baltimore, as is Bowie (home of the Double-A Chesapeake Baysox). Single-A Delmarva and Triple-A Norfolk are within driving distance from Frederick as well. Other relatively nearby Minor League options include the Wilmington Blue Rocks, Harrisburg Senators and Altoona Curve.

The Road to Baltimore

Orioles farmhands don't have to travel far as they work their way up the system. As detailed above, the Baltimore system includes three teams in Maryland and one in Virginia.

Single-A: Delmarva Shorebirds
High-A: Frederick Keys
Double-A: Chesapeake Baysox
Triple-A: Norfolk Tides
