Chen posts first 'W' as O's power past Yanks

NEW YORK -- Baltimore hit three home runs and got a quality outing from starter Wei-Yin Chen to snap a four-game losing skid with a 6-2 win Saturday afternoon over the Yankees.

After dropping the first two games of the four-game set at Yankee Stadium, the Orioles watched Jimmy Paredes, Chris Davis and Alejandro De Aza go deep off Yankees starter Chase Whitley to set the tone early.

Chen went seven innings of one-run baseball to pick up his first win of the season. He held the Yankees to five hits and a walk, striking out seven.

The Yankees got on the board on John Ryan Murphy's fifth-inning sacrifice fly and scored an unearned run in the eighth on a Carlos Beltran single.

MOMENTS THAT MATTERED
O's go deep: The Orioles, who led the Majors in home runs last season, went yard three times to take an early lead. Red-hot Paredes started things off with a solo shot two outs into the third inning, while Davis (solo homer) and De Aza (two-run shot) went deep in the fourth. Paredes, who also tripled and scored in the seventh inning, is batting .347. More >

"He's locked in," De Aza said of Paredes, "And I hope he stays like that until the end of the season."

Chase chased: Whitley pitched well in his first two starts replacing the injured Masahiro Tanaka in the Yankees' rotation, but he wasn't nearly as strong on Saturday. Whitley made mistakes with first-pitch fastballs to Paredes and Davis, who both homered, and later missed with a 2-2 changeup that De Aza hit into the right-field seats. Davis also homered off Whitley last season, and he is now 3-for-5 with one walk against the Yankees right-hander. The one positive for the Yankees was that Whitley made it two outs into the sixth inning, saving some wear on the bullpen. More >

Chen cruises:The lefty became the first Oriole in four games to go at least six innings and lowered his ERA to an impressive 2.52 in the process. Chen has turned in a quality start in four of his last five outings.

"Me, of course, I'm happy [to get a victory], but what matters the most is we won the game," Chen said through an interpreter. "That's what's important." More >

REPLAY REVIEW
The game ended with players from both teams not sure it was actually over, thanks to a review of the final out. With two on and two out, Brett Gardner hit a ground ball that was fielded by Davis at first base. Davis threw to pitcher Zach Britton, who was covering first, and Britton's foot and Gardner's hand reached the base at nearly the same time. Umpire Mark Carlson signaled that he was out, but Yankees manager Joe Girardi asked for a review. It didn't take long for the umpires to confirm the call and officially end the game.

"I felt like it was really close," Gardner said. "But not close enough."

TAKING A DAY
Alex Rodriguez was out of the Yankees' lineup because of what Girardi described as tightness in his legs, but the manager is hopeful that his designated hitter will return on Sunday. Rodriguez mentioned the tightness after Friday night's game, in which he went 1-for-3 with his first triple since 2012, but Yankees manager Joe Girardi waited until Saturday morning to make the decision not to start him. "People talk about exit [velocities] ... your ears tell you what exit velo is when guys hit up here," Showalter said. "And Jimmy is making some loud noises."

WHAT'S NEXT
Orioles: Right-hander Bud Norris -- who was under the weather Saturday -- is scheduled to start for the O's in Sunday's series finale, with first pitch set for 1:05 p.m. ET. Baltimore will end a two-city road trip -- though the first leg was a "home" series at Tropicana Field -- and return to Maryland after the game.

Yankees: Michael Pineda, who has never lost in five career starts against the Orioles, will try to go 5-0 on the season, as the Yankees look to clinch the four-game series at Yankee Stadium.
