What to watch for in today's games

All 30 teams will be in action Tuesday, starting in the afternoon and carrying on through the evening. Here are four things to watch for:

• Cueto returns: CIN @ PHI, 7:05 p.m. ET

Reds ace Johnny Cueto will make his first start since May 19 on Tuesday against the Phillies after fighting right elbow stiffness. He felt good during a bullpen session on Sunday and will take on Philadelphia's Sean O'Sullivan at Citizens Bank Park.

Jeff Samardzija and Colby Lewis will square off when the White Sox open a set with the Rangers at Globe Life Park, but the main storyline surrounds slugging third baseman Joey Gallo, who will be called up by Texas before the game. Gallo -- the ninth-best prospect in the game, according to MLB.com -- is filling in for Adrian Beltre, expected to miss at least two weeks with a left thumb sprain.

The 21-year-old Gallo has hit 91 homers across 271 Minor League games since the start of the 2013 season, and he boasts a 1.061 on-base plus slugging percentage through 34 games at Double-A Frisco this year.

• Miller in peak form: ATL @ ARI, 9:40 p.m. ET

Braves right-hander Shelby Miller has delivered eight consecutive quality starts, one of which was a shutout of the Marlins in which he lost his bid for a no-hitter with two outs in the ninth inning. After holding opponents to a .155 average in May, Miller will be up against D-backs righty Josh Collmenter, who threw a shutout of his own on April 17 at San Francisco.

• Simon back from bereavement: OAK @ DET, 7:08 p.m. ET

Tigers righty Alfredo Simon was set to start Wednesday against the A's before his father fell gravely ill. He's expected to return Tuesday to take on Oakland -- this time at Comerica Park -- and right-hander Kendall Graveman, who also spent some time away from the team recently because of a family issue.
