White Sox acquire pitcher Yency Almonte from Angels; release outfielder Dayan Viciedo

CHICAGO - The Chicago White Sox have acquired right-handed pitcher Yency Almonte from the Los Angeles Angels as the player to be named later from the August 21, 2014 trade that sent infielder Gordon Beckham to the Angels. The White Sox also requested waivers on outfielder Dayan Viciedo for the purpose of granting his unconditional release.

Almonte, 20, went 2-6 with a 5.91 ERA (30 ER/45.2 IP) and 37 strikeouts over 11 combined starts last season between the Arizona Rookie League Angels and Class A Burlington.

The 6-foot-4, 190-pound Almonte has gone 5-9 with a 6.44 ERA (73 ER/102.0 IP) and 72 strikeouts in 27 career appearances (22 starts) over three seasons in the Los Angeles organization (2012-14). The Miami native was selected by the Angels in the 17th round of the June 2012 First-Year Player Draft out of Christopher Columbus High School in Miami.

Viciedo, 25, was designated for assignment on January 28 to make room for the addition of infielder Gordon Beckham. He batted .231 (121-523) with 21 home runs and 58 RBI in 145 games with the White Sox in 2014.

Viciedo is a career .254 (425-1,675) hitter with 66 homers and 211 RBI in 483 games over five major-league seasons (2010-14) after signing with the White Sox as a free agent on December 12, 2008.
