White Sox acquire righty Turner from Cubs

CHICAGO -- The White Sox acquired right-handed pitcher Jacob Turner off of waivers from the Cubs, a move officially announced by the team on Thursday.

Turner, 24, was the ninth pick overall by the Tigers in the first round of the 2009 MLB Draft, selected in the same first round as Stephen Strasburg and Mike Trout. He has made 61 Major League appearances for the Tigers (2011-12), Marlins (2012-14) and Cubs (2014), with 51 of them coming as a starter, and has an 11-25 record with a 4.97 ERA.

Turner was traded by the Tigers along with current White Sox catcher Rob Brantly to the Marlins for Omar Infante and Anibal Sanchez in 2012. He was then moved to the Cubs on Aug. 8, 2014.

Most of Turner's 2015 season was spent on the Cubs' disabled list with a strained flexor tendon in his right elbow. He made two injury rehabilitation starts with Double-A Tennessee in June, going 1-1 with a 2.00 ERA. Turner worked eight games (six starts) with the Cubs in '14, finishing 2-4 with a 6.49 ERA over 34 2/3 innings. He is 22-20 with a 3.25 ERA and 337 strikeouts in 77 games (76 starts) over six Minor League seasons.

Mike Olt also was claimed by the White Sox from the Cubs during the 2015 season. The 27-year-old hit .203 with three homers and four RBIs over 24 games as the team's third baseman in September.

With the Turner move, the White Sox 40-man roster now stands at 38.
