White Sox to Wear 1972 Throwback Uniforms in 2012

Team Will Wear Popular Red Caps and Pinstripe Jerseys During Sunday Home Games

CHICAGO – The Chicago White Sox will wear 1972 throwback uniforms during Sunday home games in 2012.  The uniforms will feature the red pinstriped jersey with the iconic “Sox” script over the chest, red numbers (front and back) and a Sox patch on the sleeve, along with the popular red cap with its unique variation of the Sox script.  The White Sox will wear the throwback uniforms on 13 Sundays this season, starting with April 15 vs. Detroit.

The unique red caps and pinstripe jerseys were worn 40 years ago by a White Sox team led by the late legendary manager Chuck Tanner, and stars such as Dick Allen, Terry Forster, Rich “Goose” Gossage, Carlos May, Bill Melton, Jorge Orta and Wilbur Wood.  Along with winning the American League Most Valuable Player Award in 1972, Allen led the league in home runs (37), RBI (113), walks (99), on-base percentage (.420) and slugging percentage (.603).  Wood led the league in wins (24), innings pitched (376.2) and games started (49) in 1972.

“Being a part of those early 1970s White Sox teams, with a leader like Chuck Tanner and exciting players such as Dick Allen, Wilbur Wood and a young Goose Gossage, remains one of the fondest times in my career,” said former Sox slugger Bill Melton.  “The red pinstripes and red baseball cap will bring back a lot of great memories for Sox fans from that generation.”

As part of this year’s White Sox promotional schedule, the first 10,000 children 13 and under will receive a 1972 replica jersey on Sunday, June 24, when the Sox host Milwaukee.

The 2012 promotional schedule can be found at whitesox.com/promos.  The online promotional schedule will be updated as additional events, theme nights and giveaways are finalized or if any changes are made.
