Winter League roundup: Torres sharp in Zulia victory

Rays lefty allows two hits in 4 1/3 frames; Galvis and Gonzalez knock in both runs

Venezuelan Winter League

Zulia 2, Caribes 1
Making his third start of the Venezuelan Winter League season, Rays reliever Alex Torres finally found a groove on the mound, allowing one run over 4 1/3 innings, as Zulia beat Caribes. The Tampa Bay left-hander struck out four and surrendered two hits, and the bullpen made it stand up in a tight one-run ballgame. Hassan Pena earned his ninth save of the season. Freddy Galvis and Marwin Gonzalez each drove in a run for Zulia, while Niuman Romero went 2-for-3 with an RBI for Caribes. Box score

La Guaira 7, Lara 6
La Guaira and Zulia each scored twice in the seventh inning, but Cesar Suarez and Alex Cabrera's homers helped pace La Guaira in the victory. Both starters were hit hard, with Sugar Ray Marimon giving up five runs in one-plus inning of work and Chris Reed surrendering four in 1 2/3 frames. Joe Thurston homered for Lara. Box score

Caracas 11, Magallanes 7
Magallanes scored once in the bottom of the ninth but couldn't stage enough of a rally to overcome a late deficit. Caracas scored three in the fifth and five in the seventh as Gerardo Parra doubled twice and Alex Gonzalez homered. Juan Rivera had three hits for Magallanes. Box score

Aragua 7, Margarita 2
Aragua broke a tie in extra innings with a five-run 10th, putting the game out of reach as Manny Corpas and Marcel Prado each gave up two runs late. Yorman Bazardo gave up one run in six innings for Aragua, with Luis Hernandez and Guillermo Quiroz each chipping in two RBIs. Manny Pina went 2-for-3 for Margarita. Box score

Navojoa 2, Guasave 1
All the runs scored in this tight contest came in the eighth inning. After a Luis Fonseca two-run home run in the top half of the frame, Jose Rodriguez hit a solo shot, but it wasn't enough. Reliever Florencio Bustillos got the win, while Alan Guerrero lost his first game of the season. Box score

Obregon 5, Hermosillo 1
Sergio Contreras had a big night at the plate, going 3-for-4 with a home run, a double and two RBIs to lead Obregon to a 5-1 win. David Reyes got his second win of the season, allowing just one hit in 6 2/3 innings. Edgar Gonzalez lost his fourth game of the season. Box score

Los Mochis 8, Mexicali 0
Los Mochis dominated Mexicali on Friday night behind a seven-run fourth inning. Gilberto Mejia led the way, going 2-for-5 with two RBIs. Rodolfo Amador also went 2-for-4 with a home run. Marco Duarte took the loss, allowing seven runs on five hits in 3 2/3 innings. Box score

Culiacan 5, Mazatlan 4
Mazatlan put up a late rally, but it wasn't enough after Culiacan scored all five of its runs in the first inning. Ricardo Serrano led the way, going 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI. Andres Meza got his first win of the season, while Horacio Ramirez took his fourth loss. Box score

Friday's game was all about the pitching, with both teams combining for just six hits. Sho Iwasaki allowed just one hit (Gigantes' only knock of the game) in 6 2/3 innings, for the win. Reliever Sandy Rosario took the loss after Fabio Castro allowed just one hit in five innings. Box score

Carlos Pimentel picked up his third win of the season, allowing two runs on four hits in five innings. Meanwhile, Jose Contreras took his third loss of the season, allowing three runs on five hits in 3 2/3 innings. Contreras is still looking for his first win this season. Box score

Estrellas 3, Toros 2
Behind solid pitching and timely hitting, Estrellas picked up the win. Evan MacLane got his second win of the season, allowing one run on five hits in five innings. Audy Ciriaco went 2-for-2 with a double and two RBIs. Chris Leroux took the loss. Box score

Mayaguez 7, Carolina 6
Mayaguez used a consistent attack to pick up the win on Friday. Kennys Vargas went 2-for-2 with a home run and three runs scored. Steve Smith got his fifth win of the season, while Hiroki Yamada took his first loss. Box score

Santurce 6, Ponce 3

Behind a five-run fifth inning, Santurce was able to secure a 6-3 win over Ponce. The inning included four hits -- the biggest by Houston farmhand Jonathan Singleton, who belted a three-run home run. Jorge Martinez got his first win of the season, while Logan Williamson took his first loss of the season. Box score
