Wrigley cleared after postgame bomb threat

CHICAGO -- Wrigley Field was evacuated shortly after Sunday's Cubs win over the Giants because of a bomb threat.

The grounds crew was hurried off the field around 5:45 p.m. CT, and then security staff came up to the press box and asked the media to leave. Bomb-sniffing dogs checked the ballpark, and after a nearly one-hour wait, the grounds crew, stadium staff and media were allowed back in.

A police officer at the ballpark confirmed the bomb threat, which came after the game had ended, and the Cubs issued a statement:

"Following our game this afternoon, we received a bomb threat and took swift action to clear the few remaining fans, players, staff and media from the ballpark. After a thorough search by law enforcement, no evidence was found to suggest this threat was credible. We take safety at Wrigley Field seriously and are working with law enforcement authorities to pursue the person who initiated this threat."

After the evacuation, there was a heavy police presence outside the 100-year-old ballpark, which had hosted more than 39,000 fans for the finale of the Cubs' four-game series against the Giants. Chicago swept the series, winning, 2-0, on Sunday.
