Yanks up-and-comer Williams' season is over

NEW YORK -- Yankees outfielder Mason Williams, rated as the organization's No. 16 prospect by MLB Pipeline, will undergo season-ending surgery on his injured right shoulder, general manager Brian Cashman said on Tuesday.

Williams, 23, hurt the shoulder diving back into first base in a June 19 game against the Tigers at Yankee Stadium. He had been attempting to rehab the injury without success and will have the procedure performed on Friday.

A fourth-round selection by the Yanks in the 2010 Draft, Williams got his first taste of big league action this year, batting .286 (6-for-21) with three doubles, one home run and three RBIs in eight games.
