Pineda arrested for DUI in Tampa
A Tampa Police Department officer observed Pineda operating a Nissan sport utility vehicle on North Dale Mabry Highway at approximately 2:35 a.m. ET, speeding, weaving and driving without headlights.
The officer wrote that the 23-year-old Pineda "had a fixed gaze and his eyes were bloodshot, watery and glassy," and reported that Pineda's breath smelled of alcohol and his speech was slurred.
Pineda was arrested without incident and charged with driving under the influence of alcohol. He was released on $500 bond.
The Yankees had no comment on the situation.
The hurler has been rehabbing in Tampa after having surgery in April to repair a torn labrum in his pitching shoulder. Pineda is expected to resume throwing in September, with optimism that he could be ready for Spring Training. He has not pitched in a regular-season game for New York.
Acquired from the Seattle Mariners in January with pitcher Jose Campos in exchange for catcher Jesus Montero and pitcher Hector Noesi, Pineda was 9-10 with a 3.74 ERA in 28 starts for Seattle last year, earning selection as an American League All-Star and ranking fifth in the AL Rookie of the Year Award balloting.
