PHILADELPHIA -- It's been a painful week for Trea Turner.
The Phillies shortstop exited Thursday night's 6-4 loss against the Mets in the third inning after being hit by a pitch to lead off the bottom of the first. Turner was diagnosed with a right calf contusion, though his status for Saturday night’s game is up in the air.
“Day off [on Friday], so hopefully he'll be good by the night game [Saturday],” Phillies interim manager Don Mattingly said.
Turner’s calf injury came just three days after he left Monday night's game against the Marlins after being hit by a pitch on the right wrist. He sat out Tuesday's game, but returned on Wednesday to go 3-for-5 with a double and a stolen base.
Hoping to build off his three-hit effort, the struggling Turner instead once again had his night cut short after Sean Manaea plunked him with a 79 mph sweeper on his third pitch of the game.
Turner initially stayed in to run the bases, and ultimately came around to score on Alec Bohm's RBI single. While Turner then took the field in the top of the second inning, he did not return in the third.
“Got hit in a tough spot right above the bottom of the calf where it starts getting into the Achilles,” Mattingly said. “He was having trouble putting pressure, pushing off. … And I think he was having more trouble on defense. He said he felt like he was a liability on defense since he couldn't really move.”
Turner was replaced at shortstop by Edmundo Sosa, who started the game in left field. That set off a series of changes, with Justin Crawford entering the game in center, Derek Hill shifting from center to right and Brandon Marsh moving from right to left.
Mattingly added that he wanted to be extra cautious with Turner given his history with leg injuries in recent seasons. He missed a month and a half with a strained left hamstring in 2024, then was sidelined for three weeks last September with a strained right hamstring.
This, obviously, is a different situation, but the Phillies aren’t going to force the issue, especially with a player whose speed is one of his best weapons.
