HOUSTON -- While the Pirates are slowly putting back together a pitching staff that has been crushed by injuries so far this season, they know that one will definitely not be back until next year: right-hander , who has been shut down for the remainder of 2019.

The Pirates announced on Tuesday that Burdi underwent surgery to relieve symptoms of neurogenic thoracic outlet syndrome. The procedure was performed by Dr. Robert Thompson, a Washington University vascular surgeon.

Undergoing the procedure ended any hopes Burdi had to return to the mound this year, though per the Pirates, he's projected to participate in full baseball activities by Spring Training next year.

Burdi has been on the IL since April 23 with right biceps/elbow pain. Prior to that, he appeared in 11 games in relief, allowing nine runs over 8 2/3 innings.
