The Pirates swung an intradivision deal on Wednesday to acquire from the Reds.

Callihan, MLB Pipeline’s No. 19 Reds prospect before the trade, is heading to the Pirates in exchange for right-hander Kyle Nicolas.

The 25-year-old Callihan was selected in the third round of the 2019 Draft by Cincinnati and owns a career .749 OPS in 396 games in the Minors. Callihan made his MLB debut last April and recorded one hit in six plate appearances. A utility player who has played second base, first base and left field, Callihan has Minor League options remaining, meaning he doesn’t necessarily need to begin the season on the Pirates' MLB roster.

He suffered a season-ending left forearm fracture after colliding with an outfield wall on May 5 at Atlanta.

The 27-year-old Nicolas pitched in parts of three seasons for the Pirates from 2023-25, posting a 4.68 ERA across 98 innings (86 outings). Originally selected by the Marlins in the Competitive Balance B Round of the 2020 MLB Draft, Nicolas was part of a four-player trade in November 2021 that sent Jacob Stallings to Miami.
