March 9th, 2021

The Pittsburgh Pirates today announced the hiring of Stephen Perkins as the Club’s Executive Vice President, Marketing and Fan Engagement. In this role, Perkins will lead the ballclub’s marketing efforts, including fan experience, communications, broadcasting, digital and social media, special events, in-game entertainment, community outreach, and youth baseball and softball efforts.

Perkins joins the Pirates from the Washington Football Team where he served as Vice President of Marketing since 2019. While with Washington, Perkins oversaw all marketing, creative and business intelligence activities for the Club with a focus on deepening brand affinity and consumer engagement. He was an intricate part in leading the complete rebranding and renaming of the current Washington Football Team.

“Stephen is an exciting addition to our front office as he brings high-level experience in several key areas including brand strategy, fan engagement and digital marketing,” said Pirates President Travis Williams. “He will offer a unique perspective and add a trusted voice to our leadership team as we continue to enhance the fan experience.”

Perkins brings nearly 20 years of marketing experience with him to the Pirates. Prior to his time with the Washington Football Team, he spent nine years at Under Armour. His most recent position at the sports apparel brand was as Senior Director of Marketing, where he focused on global brand management of the training division.

While with Under Armour, he also served as the Director of Marketing for both the men’s and boy’s training line as well as team sports. In his time with the brand, he led the development and execution of global market strategies for key products. In addition, Perkins managed cross-functional teams including sales, product, public relations, consumer insights, creative and communications to deliver against brand-level strategies.

Perkins began his sports career at the National Football League’s headquarters where he joined the Marketing, Licensing and Business Development department in 2006. He spent nearly three years with the NFL.

A native of Jackson, Mississippi, Perkins is a graduate of Indiana University’s Kelley School of Business where he received his Master of Business Administration in Marketing and Management. He completed his undergraduate degree in management at the University of Mississippi in Oxford, Mississippi.
