Twenty minutes before they took the field to play the Blue Jays on Saturday, the Rays announced that third baseman Yandy Díaz was scratched for precautionary reasons after he was struck in the face by his own batted ball on a ricochet during batting practice.

“I think he's OK,” manager Kevin Cash said after Tampa Bay’s 2-1 walk-off win over Toronto. “Kind of a fluke thing that happened right before the game. He took a ball off his cheekbone -- nose, cheekbone, that area. We avoided a scare."

Díaz was removed from the lineup after experiencing dizziness following the incident. He was replaced at third base by Joey Wendle, who went 1-for-4 in the win.

Díaz had a big night in the Rays’ extra-inning loss to the Jays on Friday, logging three hits -- including a solo homer -- while reaching base in all five plate appearances. He also made a slick play on a grounder at third that resulted in an inning-ending double play in the seventh inning.

The 29-year-old third baseman is batting .300 with two homers and eight RBIs in 26 games this season.
