DENVER -- The truck perched high above the left-field bleachers was barely safe from the Rockies’ C.J. Cron on Friday night. So was the seven-run lead Cron’s two-run homer gave his team in the fourth inning against the D-backs. Turns out, the ball did not hit the truck, and while the early advantage wasn’t safe, Colorado was fine, pulling out a 13-10 walk-off win.

Cron’s massive homer off D-backs right-hander Keynan Middleton, which landed well above the seats and near that white promotional truck, was projected at 504 feet, matching the longest home run hit at Coors Field since Statcast began tracking in 2015. Giancarlo Stanton also hit a 504-foot homer here on Aug. 6, 2016, when he was with the Marlins.

Cron's home run was one foot shorter than a 505-footer hit by Nomar Mazara (then with the Rangers) on June 21, 2019, the longest tracked by Statcast.

“Pretty cool,” Cron said. “I’m a big dude. I like hitting homers.”

Cron didn’t care how far the ball went, as long as it didn’t go foul.

“It felt good off my bat,” Cron said. “I was just hoping that it stayed fair. So I was happy that it did, and happy to add on more runs.”

The homer was Cron’s 27th of the season. Strangely, it wasn’t the most unusual aspect of the evening.

Cron’s homer put the Rockies ahead, 8-1. But in the top of the fifth, the D-backs scored nine runs -- including a Daulton Varsho go-ahead grand slam off Austin Gomber that gave Arizona a 10-8 lead. But Colorado rallied back and won on Elias Díaz's three-run walk-off homer in the ninth, his second of the night.

To say the ball was flying at Coors Field on this night is an understatement. Cron’s blast was one of five hit by the Rockies and a combined eight by both teams.

Games at Coors Field this season are turning into long-drive contests. Cron’s homer was the second this week -- and the fifth this year -- to travel at least 486 feet.

Cron, it turns out, had missed putting himself on the long-distance chart.

“It was fun to finally hit one," Cron said. "It’s been a while since I hit one like that, so I’ll take it."

He hit that one farther than a lot of eyes can see.

“There’ve been some long ones the last few games,” Rockies manager Bud Black said. “I’ve tried to eyeball them a little bit. My eyesight is not what it used to be. Cronie’s was up there by that ice cream sign, or a little bit down below the Tundra sign."
