Rockies Stat of the Day: July 2021

August 5th, 2021

MLB.com is keeping track of a Stat of the Day for the Rockies this season, highlighting a unique, interesting or fun nugget from each game.

July 31: Rockies 5, Padres 3 -- Márquez mashes
Germán Márquez connected for his second career home run after he sent Yu Darvish's slider 418 feet to center field in the fifth inning. The home run was the second of Márquez's career, making him just the ninth pitcher in Rockies franchise history to hit multiple home runs. Of the nine pitchers to hit multiple homers, only Mike Hampton (13) and Brian Bohanon (3) hit more than two homers in their careers.

July 30: Rockies 9, Padres 4 -- HR happy Rox
With four home runs from four players, the Rockies tied a franchise high for big flies at Petco Park. Only three other times in Rockies history have they hit four homers in a game at Petco Park -- the last time they did so was on Sept. 10, 2015.

July 29: Padres 3, Rockies 0 -- Dubious shutout mark tied
With a 3-0 loss to the Padres, it marked the 13th time this season Colorado was shut out. That number puts the 2021 Rockies in a tie with the '93 club for the most shutout losses in a single season in franchise history.

July 28: Angels 8, Rockies 7 -- Tapia breaks out
Raimel Tapia turned in a 4-for-5, two-RBI performance that included a hustle double in the first inning and another off the center-field wall later in seventh. Tapia entered the night batting just .207 over 18 games in July. However, he is 8-for-17 (.470) in his last four contests.

July 27: Rockies 12, Angels 3 -- A long time coming
The Rockes' C.J. Cron doesn't steal many bases. But when he does, he saves them for the Angels -- his first Major League team (2014-17). Cron's steal in the first inning on Tuesday night was his first steal since May 17, 2018, for the Rays against the Angels. That was 312 games ago.

July 26: Angels 6, Rockies 2 -- Rox starters doing their part
The Rockies are 1-3 on their current road trip despite solid starting pitching -- such as Monday, when Germán Márquez struck out eight and gave up three earned runs (four total) in 6 1/3 innings. In those four games, Colorado starters have posted a 3.86 ERA and struck out 22 against four walks. The one issue has been home runs -- five in 23 1/3 innings. Márquez yielded a two-run shot to Jack Mayfield in the seventh.

July 25: Dodgers 3, Rockies 2 -- Díaz bangs another one
Elias Díaz, who homered for the second time in three games, is turning the Rockies' catching position from a longtime offensive hole to something approaching a strength. Since June 16, when he shed a poor start by going 3-for-3 with a home run at home against San Diego, Díaz has batted .311 with eight home runs, a 1.048 OPS and 13 RBIs.

July 24: Dodgers 1, Rockies 0 -- Blackmon a tough out
Pitchers can get Rockies outfielder Charlie Blackmon out -- he went 1-for-4 -- but he doesn't make it easy. His performance ran his streak to 35 plate appearances without a strikeout. Going into the game, Blackmon's was the second-longest active streak in the Majors.

July 23: Rockies 9, Dodgers 6 -- Hilliard a star in Hollywood
The Rockies generally don't enjoy trips to Dodger Stadium, but Sam Hilliard loves the place. Hilliard swatted a pinch-hit home run in the ninth inning on Friday, and has six home runs and eight RBIs in 12 games at Chavez Ravine.

July 21: Rockies 6, Mariners 3 -- Rox still feeling at home
The Rockies had a rare losing homestand, going 2-3 against the Dodgers and Mariners. But they are still 33-20 at Coors Field this season, and since May 21, they're 20-8 -- the best home record in the National League over that period.

July 20: Mariners 6, Rockies 4 -- Blackmon turns back the clock
Rockies right fielder Charlie Blackmon went 2-for-4, and he also turned back the clock. The 35-year-old outfielder tripled and stole his second base of the season (his first came in Colorado's previous game). It was Blackmon's first game with a triple and a steal since May 9, 2017. He has stolen bases in consecutive games for the first time since Sept. 3-4, 2018. And his two steals match his season totals from 2019 and '20.

July 18: Rockies 6, Dodgers 5 (10 innings) -- Take a walk (off)
Charlie Blackmon's 10th-inning solo homer against the Dodgers' Phil Bickford gave the Rockies their 10th walk-off win of the season, which leads the Majors and ties the 2010 team for the club record. The Rockies are 32-19 at home this season.

July 17: Dodgers 9, Rockies 2 -- Home sweet home, except ...
The loss dropped the Rockies to 1-5 against the Dodgers at Coors Field in 2021. They are 30-14 against everyone else at home this season.

July 16: Dodgers 10, Rockies 4 -- Rockies have Dodger blues
The Rockies dropped to 1-7 against the Dodgers this season, with the losses all coming after the Rockies won the April 1 season opener.

July 11: Rockies 3, Padres 1 -- Black’s 2,000th game
Rockies skipper Bud Black reached 2,000 games as a Major League manager. He is the 62nd manager in MLB history to reach that milestone. His 2,000th game came in San Diego, where Black began his managerial career in 2007. He was the Friars' skipper for 1,362 games.

July 10: Rockies 3, Padres 0 -- Márquez moves up strikeout list
With his fifth strikeout on Saturday night, Germán Márquez passed Pedro Astacio (749) for fourth among the Rockies' all-time strikeout leaders. With his nine strikeouts on the night, he has 754 total, trailing teammate Jon Gray (765) for third among the franchise's strikeout leaders.

July 9: Padres 4, Rockies 2 -- Three more zeros for Freeland
By keeping the Padres off the board through the first 3 1/3 innings in his start on Friday night, Kyle Freeland extended his streak of scoreless innings to 15 1/3. That made it the longest scoreless streak among all Rockies pitchers this season.

July 8: Rockies 9, D-backs 3 -- Chi Chi keeps competing
Call Chi Chi González the Rockies' spot starter who seems to always have a spot. González was one mistake pitch -- Josh VanMeter's two-run fifth-inning homer -- away from another standout performance on Thursday. Still, Colorado's two-run sixth gave González (3-5) a win. In his last three starts, González has a very respectable 3.18 ERA. Throughout the season, he has subbed into the rotation for Kyle Freeland, Jon Gray and Austin Gomber, who won't return from a left forearm injury until after the All-Star break. But as long as González gives solid work in his opportunities, the Rockies can be comfortable with their rotation depth.

July 7: D-backs 6, Rockies 4 -- Putting up a fight
The Rockies lost to the D-backs to drop to 6-33 on the road. But there was more offensive fight than usual. It was just the 12th time in 39 road games that the Rockies scored more than three runs.

July 6: D-backs 4, Rockies 3 -- Rox fall on walk-off HBP
The Rockies have been playing since 1993, but they had never previously lost a game on a walk-off hit-by-pitch, until this one. Daniel Bard loaded the bases on a single and pair of walks in the bottom of the ninth inning, then hit David Peralta with a pitch on the left leg to end it. All four players who reached base were left-handed batters. Lefty hitters are now batting .341 with 10 walks against Bard this season.

July 4: Rockies 3, Cardinals 2 -- Story finds his stroke
Trevor Story dealt with an elbow injury and some plain bad-luck on some hard-hit balls early in the season, but it's turning his way now. His first-inning solo home run off Cardinals starter Carlos Martínez was his sixth homer in his past 12 games. With 11 homers and 15 stolen bases, Story also is one of six National League players with double digits in both categories. The others are the Braves' Ronald Acuña Jr. and Ozzie Albies, the Padres' Fernando Tatis Jr., the Nationals' Trea Turner and the Cubs’ Javier Báez.

July 3: Rockies 3, Cardinals 2 -- Freeland, rotation in a zone
Lefty starter Kyle Freeland held the Cardinals scoreless on three hits, with three walks and three strikeouts, in six innings. Freeland missed the beginning of the year with a left shoulder strain and languished with a 9.58 ERA in his first five starts. But in his last three turns, he has held opponents to one run and 11 hits over 17 innings. Through the first six games of this homestand, Rockies starters have a 1.35 ERA (40 innings pitched, six earned runs).

July 2: Cardinals 9, Rockies 3 (10) – Another HR for Díaz
With his solo home run to lead off the fifth inning, the Rockies' Elias Díaz became the first catcher in club history to hit homers in four straight games in a single season. He also tied Charles Johnson (who went deep from Sept. 28, 2003 to April 9, 2004) for the club-record home run streak for a catcher in any stretch. Díaz's run is the longest for any Rockies payer since David Dahl homered in five straight, Sept. 24-28, 2018.

July 1: Rockies 5, Cardinals 2 -- Senzatela's home cooking
Antonio Senzatela held the Cardinals to two runs on seven scattered hits with five strikeouts in seven innings of a dramatic 5-2 walk-off victory for the Rockies. In five starts at Coors Field since May 16, Senzatela has a 2.48 ERA with 18 strikeouts and three walks in 32 2/3 innings. In those five home starts, he has induced six double-play grounders -- including one on Thursday.
