SURPRISE, Ariz. -- Baseball observers will all agree that Spring Training numbers are often meaningless.
Yet, the woeful spring numbers from Alex Gordon have caught the attention of manager Ned Yost and the Royals' coaching staff.

Entering Wednesday night's 12-8 win over the Indians, Gordon was hitting .087 (4-for-46) with zero home runs and three RBIs, and he had 15 strikeouts and zero hits in his last 33 at-bats. Gordon got out of that funk by going 2-for-3 with an RBI.

Yost said Wednesday he likely will send Gordon to play in some Minor League games -- a common practice among MLB teams during Spring Training -- starting Thursday in hopes of helping Gordon get his timing back.
"He has the benefit of going over there and getting 12-14 at-bats in one day," Yost said. "He can DH [in the Cactus League] and get four at-bats in three hours. He can get 12-14 at-bats over there in three hours.
"You go over there [to Minor League games] and it's constantly going from field to field with all the games going on and getting at-bats, improving your timing."
Yost said his concern level with Gordon, who hit .208 last season and .220 in 2016, is not yet high.
"It's Spring Training," Yost said. "It doesn't mean anything. I'm sure he wants to feel good heading into the season. But we've got a little time left for him to do that. It can happen quickly."

Yost seemed slightly irritated when reminded that rumors surfaced on Twitter on Wednesday night that the Royals were considering starting Gordon in the Minor Leagues this season. That misunderstanding came from an in-game interview Yost did on FOX Sports Kansas City in which his words were misconstrued. In the interview, Yost was referring to possibly sending Gordon to play in some Minor League games during camp, not optioning him to the Minors.
Gordon does have an option left, but as a five-years-plus player in the big leagues, he would have the right to decline being sent to the Minors -- not that Yost or the Royals even remotely considered the notion.
"It's so stupid," Yost said. "That stuff drives me crazy.
"We [send Major League players to Minor League camp] all the time. We have [Brad] Keller and [Kelvin] Herrera throwing in Minor League games today. Does that mean we're sending them down? Of course, not.
"I saw that Ichiro [Suzuki] had 17-18 at-bats in Minor League games the other day. It's how you get work in down here."
Yost said he's confident Gordon will find his stroke.
"He's searching," Yost said. "Definitely searching a little bit. But he'll figure it out. He almost always does."
