CHICAGO -- Yolmer Sanchez singled with one out in the ninth inning and the bases loaded off reliever , giving the White Sox a 2-1 walk-off victory over the Royals on Tuesday at Guaranteed Rate Field.

This was the conclusion of a suspended game from Monday. That contest was tied at 1 in the bottom of the fifth when a second rain delay occurred, which essentially made the field unplayable.

Royals left-hander , who pitched a scoreless eighth inning, faced one batter in the ninth, left-handed-hitting Yonder Alonso, and hit him.

“I pushed Jake one more batter,” manager Ned Yost said, “because we liked that matchup.”

Yost brought in the right-handed McCarthy, who gave up a double to right to James McCann that sent pinch-runner Tim Anderson to third. The Royals then issued an intentional walk to load the bases.

After a forceout at home got one out, Yost employed a five-man infield against Sanchez, who lined a 1-0 sinker over the infield into center field for a hit.

“We tried the five-man infield and it just didn’t work,” Yost said.

The Royals just missed scoring in the top of the ninth when Adalberto Mondesi flied out to the wall in center field, and Hunter Dozier flied out deep to left.

“Both of them were just off the end of the bat,” Yost said. “Just missed.”

The Royals took a 1-0 lead in the fourth inning when Dozier singled to left, driving in Mondesi, who had doubled.

Right-hander Homer Bailey started for Kansas City and was sharp, going 4 1/3 innings before the first rain delay struck. He gave up three hits and one run, while striking out five.
