Polanco returns to camp after personal matter

Romero struggles in latest outing; Odorizzi gets work on backfield; roster moves expected soon

DUNEDIN, Fla. -- Shortstop Jorge Polanco returned to camp Sunday after leaving last week for a personal matter.

The early reports have Polanco returning to the lineup Monday against the Red Sox, but manager Rocco Baldelli wasn’t ready to confirm that before Sunday’s game against the Blue Jays.

“He was scheduled to be back, I’d love to catch up with him before I get into anything related to him,” Baldelli said. “But the plan right now for Jorge is to get back, settle in and do whatever he needs to do as far as getting any work in that he wants to get in the field today and get him back in [the lineup] whenever he’s ready.”

Polanco, 25, has a career slash line of .272/.339/.420 with 23 home runs, 64 doubles and 147 RBIs in 288 Major League games -- all with the Twins.

He signed a five-year, $25.75 million contract extension in the offseason.

Rough one for Romero

Right-hander Fernando Romero had arguably been the Twins' most impressive reliever this spring, but Sunday’s 9-8 loss to the Blue Jays in Dunedin, Fla., is an outing he’d like to forget.

Romero let all five batters he faced reach base and walked three of them. He gave up five runs, four earned and a hit. He didn’t get any help in the field as third baseman Adam Rosales bobbled a ground ball for an error.

“I think it was an outing where he really didn’t settle in and get to a point where he found his release point,” Baldelli said. “I think it’s a good outing to kind of wipe clean because I’ve really enjoyed the way he’s thrown the ball this spring. Things like this do happen and it’s a great challenge to kind of look past and have a small memory and make a small adjustment here and there and come back and do what he’s been doing.”

Odorizzi stays back

Sunday was supposed to be right-hander Jake Odorizzi’s spring rotation turn, but Baldelli chose to leave him back to get his work in on one of the backfields at the Twins' complex, rather than take the long bus ride from Fort Myers to Dunedin.

“Odorizzi is scheduled to throw on a back field,” Baldelli said. “When you can, and the player isn’t making too many backfield excursions the two-and-a-half-hour trip is not something you generally want to put guys through unless you have to.”

Odorizzi has started in two spring games and has given up five runs on six hits in 3 1/3 innings. His next scheduled Grapefruit League appearance would likely be Friday.

Roster moves expected soon

Baldelli said there would be additional roster moves made in the next day or so as he wants to get the starters the bulk of the work in the final eight games of spring.

“We’re going to probably make some more moves in the next day or two,” Baldelli said. “We need to get to the point where our main players are getting most of the at-bats in camp.”

Currently the Twins have 44 active players in camp with 13 non-roster invitees. That number will probably be reduced by three or four players before Monday. Baldelli said there will be a balance between making sure the bench players get some work in as well.

“The other members of the team … they’re going to be essentially coming in a lot of games,” Baldelli said. “We’ll try to get guys the work they need but the everyday guys are going to take most of the at-bats at this point.”

Up next

Right-hander Jose Berrios will make his fifth start of the spring when he faces the Red Sox in Fort Myers, Fla., on Monday at 12:05 p.m. CT. The Red Sox will have right-hander Nathan Eovaldi on the mound.
