Austin apologizes for father's Twitter gripes

August 22nd, 2018

CHICAGO -- last tweeted on April 30 about drinking "some sweet tea" in Houston. But recently he's soured on Twitter for an entirely different reason.
Austin's father caused a stir on Twitter after a user took screenshots of tweets seeming to complain about the playing time of former Yankee teammate, Greg Bird. As a result, Austin all but apologized for his father's tweets Tuesday before the Twins' game with the White Sox.
"Pretty embarrassed about what my dad put on there," Austin said. "Didn't know about it until somebody sent me a picture of it, and told him immediately to take it down. It's embarrassing and it should never have happened."
Austin added that he will reach out to Bird personally to apologize.
Austin's father tweeted on Aug. 11, "18 homerun [sic] for Tyler on the year but bird is word." On Aug. 18, he sent out, "Tyler has more hits with the twins [sic] in a week than bird has in a month with the Yankees."
The Twins acquired Austin from the Yankees at the Trade Deadline in the deal that sent pitcher to the Bronx. After being called up from Triple-A Rochester on Aug. 11, Austin has hit .370/.400/.741 with three homers for Minnesota.
