Braves capitalize on sloppy Cards fielding in G1

October 4th, 2019

The Braves made the Cardinals pay for some uncharacteristically poor fielding in the first and sixth innings of Atlanta's 7-6 loss in Game 1 of the National League Division Series at SunTrust Park on Thursday.

With the bases loaded and two outs in the sixth, Dansby Swanson hit a sharp run-scoring single to third that was originally ruled a fielding error by Tommy Edman. As Josh Donaldson crossed the plate to give Atlanta a 2-1 lead, shortstop Paul DeJong gathered the ball on a carom but made an errant throw to second, allowing Nick Markakis to score the Braves' third run.

Giovanny Gallegos was on the hill, but both runs (only one of which was earned) were on Tyler Webb's ledger.

DeJong's error was the second of the day for the Cardinals, who fell behind, 1-0, on a first-inning fielder's choice that saw second baseman Kolten Wong commit an error.
