Braves acquire C Stephen Vogt from D-backs

July 17th, 2021

ATLANTA -- With Travis d’Arnaud injured and still at least a few weeks away from returning, the Braves have once again attempted to strengthen their catching mix by acquiring from the D-backs in exchange for Minor League first baseman Mason Berne early Saturday morning.

Vogt will now team with Kevan Smith to handle the Braves’ catching duties. The 36-year-old veteran hit .212 with five homers and a .693 OPS in 151 plate appearances for the D-backs this year.

To create a roster spot for Vogt, the Braves have designated Jonathan Lucroy for assignment. Lucroy spent most of this season with Triple-A Gwinnett before joining Atlanta’s roster on July 7. He played just two games for the Braves.

Berne was selected in the 33rd round of the 2018 MLB Draft. Three years after being drafted, he has played just 13 games above the Florida Complex League, which was previously known as the Gulf Coast League.

d’Arnaud has been sidelined since tearing ligaments in his left thumb on May 1. There is hope he’ll return to being Atlanta’s primary catcher at some point during the first half of August.
