SAN FRANCISCO -- Jake Arrieta may have just upstaged Travis Wood.
Two days after Wood became the second reliever in postseason history to hit a home run, Arrieta crushed a three-run blast off Madison Bumgarner on Monday to give the Cubs an early lead in Game 3 of the National League Division Series at AT&T Park. 
However impressive, the feat wasn't enough to punch the Cubs' ticket to the NL Championship Series, as they fell to the Giants, 6-5, in 13 innings. The NLDS resumes with Game 4 on Tuesday night, live on FS1 at 8:30 ET/7:30 CT.

Before Monday, Bumgarner had never served up a home run to a pitcher. And before this series, no pitcher had gone deep in the postseason since Joe Blanton in the 2008 World Series.
Cubs pitchers have now done so in consecutive games, making them the first team since the 1924 New York Giants to have two pitchers homer in the same postseason series. Cubs pitchers have combined for six RBIs, twice as many as the position players had contributed through the first three innings of Game 3.
Arrieta, who a few months ago joined Bumgarner in expressing interest in pitchers possibly taking Home Run Derby cuts, has showcased power potential before. He was one of four starting pitchers with multiple home runs this season and had four in his career. He also led all pitchers with 17 regular-season hits, one more than Bumgarner, in 2016.
Monday's blast, which salvaged a two-out scoring opportunity for the Cubs, traveled 377 feet, according to Statcast™ projections. It came off his bat at 106.7 mph, making it the third hardest-hit homer by a pitcher this season. The hardest hit was by Bumgarner at 109.4 mph on June 2.
Arrieta is the first pitcher to drive in at least three with a postseason home run since Steve Carlton did so with a three-run shot off Don Sutton in Game 3 of the 1978 NLCS between the Phillies and Dodgers.
