SAN DIEGO -- The Diamondbacks placed right-hander Corbin Burnes on the 15-day injured list with shoulder inflammation on Friday, the club announced.
Burnes had been scheduled to start Saturday night's game against the Padres as the Diamondbacks try to chase down the Phillies for the final NL Wild Card spot.
Burnes was signed by the Diamondbacks to a six-year, $210 million contract prior to the 2025 season and made 11 starts before having to undergo Tommy John surgery in June last year. The hope at the time was that he would return to the Diamondbacks around the All-Star Break this season.
However, in June, Burnes suffered a strain of his right teres major muscle which set him back, and he did not make his season debut for Arizona until Sept. 8 when he started and threw three shutout innings against the Royals.
Over his next two starts, Burnes allowed nine earned runs in 7 1/3 innings.
It's unclear who will take Burnes' place Saturday, but the Diamondbacks could go with a bullpen game. Starter Ryne Nelson, who recently returned from injury and was shifted to the bullpen, could play a pivotal role in the game.
The Diamondbacks also have Zac Gallen, whose struggles this year shifted him to a bullpen role earlier this month and could also be a candidate to see innings.
