Realmuto, Anderson looking for All-Star support

Catcher, right fielder overlooked in voting so far despite worthy numbers

June 19th, 2018

SAN FRANCISCO -- All-Star-worthy seasons sometimes get overlooked for players on teams that are in last place. Marlins catcher J.T. Realmuto and right fielder find themselves in that situation.
VOTE: 2018 Camping World MLB All-Star Ballot
Both are posting impressive numbers, and in terms of their performance, stack up with the tops at their respective positions. But neither ranks among the leaders in the latest National League All-Star ballot results that were announced on Monday.
Realmuto has become the face the franchise, and is regarded as one of the most athletic players at his position. The 27-year-old was on the disabled list for the first three weeks of the season, recovering from a low-back bruise. But since he's returned, he's posting impressive numbers. In fact, his Fangraphs WAR -- or fWAR -- of 2.5 is tops among all National League catchers.
"Obviously, we're not going to get the exposure of a bigger market," manager Don Mattingly said. "The players vote now, too, and we [managers/coaches] vote, so you do get somewhat of a say of what the players think. And the managers and the coaches think. I think there is an input you'd get on our guys, like J.T., that you would look at. Somebody is really looking at it to try to get the best guys there."

Anderson has been one of the top NL rookies, and the 25-year-old also has numbers that stack up with the best at his position. Among all NL outfielders, Anderson has an fWAR of 1.7, which is eighth.
Anderson opened the season at third base, but has moved to right field, and he's been a steady run producer all season.
