The Miami Marlins today announced three additions to the organization's Amateur Scouting department: Marti Wolever as Senior Advisor, Amateur Scouting; Mike Soper as Regional Supervisor; and T.R. Lewis as Special Assignment Scout.
Wolever joins the Marlins for his 36th season as a Major League scout, the last four as West Coast Scouting Supervisor for Detroit. A former outfielder in the Reds' and Expos' systems and an assistant baseball coach at Kansas State University, he began his scouting career in 1984 as Midwest Area Scouting Supervisor for the Tigers. He moved on to the same position with the Yankees in 1988, was named Midwest Crosschecking Supervisor for the White Sox in 1990, and became National Crosschecker for the Phillies in 1993.

Wolever spent 22 years with Philadelphia, earning promotions to Scouting Director and Assistant General Manager of Amateur Scouting. He signed numerous all-stars and National League regular season and postseason MVPs with the Phillies, including Ryan Howard (2005 NL Rookie of the Year; 2006 NL MVP; 2009 NLCS MVP), Jimmy Rollins (2007 NL MVP), Cole Hamels (2008 NLCS and WS MVP), Chase Utley (six-time all-star), and Aaron Nola (2018 all-star), as well as 2017 Rookie of the Year candidate Rhys Hoskins.

Soper is a South Florida native with 30 years of experience as a player and scout. He joins the Marlins after 14 years with the Cleveland Indians as an Area Scout and Crosschecker.

He was drafted in the third round by the White Sox out of Miami Palmetto High School in 1983, and reached Triple-A with the Yankees in 1986. After retiring, he attended Miami-Dade South and Florida International University before beginning his scouting career in 1995 as an Area Supervisor for Oakland. He moved on to East Coast Crosschecker for the Cubs from 2000-2004 before joining the Indians.

Lewis joins the Marlins after 11 years with the Arizona Diamondbacks, as an amateur scout from 20072017 and in a pro scouting role in 2018. He scouted the deep south region on the amateur side, signing future Major Leaguers Brad Keller and Daniel Palka. Lewis had an 11-year playing career in the Minor Leagues after being drafted by the Baltimore Orioles in 1989; he reached the Triple-A level for the Orioles, Boston, Atlanta, and Texas.

In addition to the new hires, the Marlins also announced that Ryan Wardinsky has been promoted to Regional Supervisor. Wardinsky had been an Area Scout for the Marlins since 2005, most recently covering the South Texas region since 2010.
