METS SIGN RHP MICHAEL TONKIN

FLUSHING, N.Y., December 6, 2023 – The New York Mets announced today that the club has signed right-handed pitcher Michael Tonkin to a one-year contract.

Tonkin, 34, spent the 2023 season as a member of the Atlanta Braves, his first major league action since 2017. He appeared in 45 games, going 7-3 with a 4.28 ERA (38 ER/80.0 IP) with 23 walks and 75 strikeouts. He held right-handed hitters to a .190 (30-158) batting average.

In 186 career games across six major league seasons, the 6-7, 220-pounder has posted a 10-6 record with a 4.37 ERA (110 ER/226.1 IP) with 77 walks and 224 strikeouts. He spent the 2018 season with the Hokkaido Nippon-Ham Fighters in the NPB appearing in 53 games with the club and posting a 4-4 record with a 3.71 ERA (21 ER/51.0 IP) with 23 walks and 33 strikeouts.

Tonkin made a major league-leading 24 relief appearances of 2.0 innings or longer last season, tied for the third-most by a National League pitcher since 2000.

The Glendale, CA native was originally selected in the 30th round by the Minnesota Twins in the 2008 First-Year Player Draft out of Palmdale (CA) High School.
