White Sox claim catcher Rob Brantly off waivers from Miami

SAN DIEGO - The Chicago White Sox have claimed catcher Rob Brantly off waivers from the Miami Marlins.

Brantly, 25, batted .255 (93-364) with four home runs and 37 RBI in 101 games last season with Class AAA New Orleans in the Miami organization.

The 6-foot-1, 195-pound Brantly, who bats left-handed, appeared in 98 games with the Marlins during the 2012-13 seasons, batting .235 (76-323) with four home runs and 26 RBI. He was Miami's Opening Day catcher in 2013 after hitting .290 (29-100) with three homers and eight RBI in 31 games with the club in 2012.

Brantly originally was selected by Detroit in the third round of the 2010 draft out of the University of California-Riverside. He played in the Futures Game in 2012 before being traded by the Tigers to Miami on July 23, 2012 as part of a five-player deal that yielded infielder Omar Infante and pitcher Anibal Sanchez.

With the move, the White Sox 40-man roster is at 40.
