D-backs acquire Godley and Mejia from Cubs for Montero

PHOENIX - The Arizona Diamondbacks (@Dbacks) acquired right-handed pitchers Zack Godley (@godleyzt) and Jeferson Mejia (@tukymejia) from the Chicago Cubs for catcher Miguel Montero, as announced by D-backs Senior Vice President & General Manager Dave Stewart.

Mejia was rated as the Cubs' 17th-best prospect by MLB.com.

Godley, 24, combined to go 4-3 with 15 saves, a 3.09 ERA (19 ER in 55.1 IP) and 77 strikeouts in 40 games with Single-A Kane County and Single-A Advanced Daytona. He averaged 12.5 strikeouts per 9.0 innings pitched and limited opponents to a .232 average (49-for-211).

In 2 seasons in the Cubs' organization (2013-14), the 6-foot-3, 235-pounder has gone 6-3 with 15 saves, a 2.74 ERA (25 ER in 82.0 IP) and 105 strikeouts in 54 relief appearances. Godley was selected by the Cubs in the 10th round of the 2013 First-Year Player Draft from the University of Tennessee.

Mejia, 20, appeared in 12 games (2 starts) for the Arizona League Mesa Cubs last season and went 2-4 with a 2.48 ERA (11 ER in 40.0 IP) and .204 opponents average with 17 walks and 45 strikeouts. He held righties to a .192 average (20-for-104) with 9 walks and 33 strikeouts while lefties hit .233 (10-for-43) with 8 walks and 12 strikeouts. In his first outing, he threw 5.0 scoreless frames with 9 strikeouts, and over his first 4 outings, he allowed 2 earned runs in 14.1 innings. He closed out his season allowing 2 earned runs in 17.1 innings over his final 4 appearances (2 starts).

The 6-foot-7, 195-pounder played parts of 2 seasons in the Cubs system in the Arizona League in 2014 and with the Dominican Summer League Cubs in 2013. In 15 games (5 starts), he was 2-4 with a 2.57 ERA (14 ER in 49.0 IP) and 51 strikeouts. The native of Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic signed with the Cubs as a non-drafted free agent on July 2, 2013.

Montero, 31, was a two-time All-Star (2011, 2014) and spent parts of 9 seasons with the D-backs (2006-14) after signing as a non-drafted free agent in 2001. In 906 games, he hit .264 (795-for-3,017) with 172 doubles, 6 triples, 97 home runs and 448 RBI.
