White Sox claim Kyle Drabek off waivers from Toronto; place Nate Jones on 60-day disabled list

The Chicago White Sox have claimed right-handed pitcher Kyle Drabek off waivers from the Toronto Blue Jays and have placed right-hander Nate Jones on the 60-day disabled list.

Drabek, 27, spent most of the 2014 season with Class AAA Buffalo in the Blue Jays organization, going 7-7 with a 4.18 ERA (46 ER/99.0 IP) and 68 strikeouts over 32 appearances (13 starts). He also made two appearances with Toronto after being recalled on August 16, working 3.0 scoreless IP.

The 6-foot-2, 205-pound Drabek is 8-15 with a 5.27 ERA (101 ER/172.1 IP) and 118 strikeouts in 39 games (30 starts) over parts of five major-league seasons with the Blue Jays (2010-14). His best season came with Class AA New Hampshire in 2010 when he was named Eastern League Pitcher of the Year after going 14-9 with a 2.94 ERA (53 ER/162.0 IP) and 132 strikeouts over 27 starts.

Drabek, the son of former major-league pitcher Doug Drabek, originally was selected by Philadelphia in the first round (18th overall) of the 2006 draft. He was traded to Toronto on December 16, 2009 with catcher Travis d'Arnaud and outfielder Michael Taylor in exchange for pitcher Roy Halladay.

Jones, 29, appeared in just two games in 2014 due to hip and elbow injuries. He was placed on the 15-day disabled list on April 4 with a muscle strain in his left hip and transferred to the 60-day disabled list on May 3. He underwent a microdiscectomy on May 5 and Tommy John surgery on July 29.

Jones has gone 12-5 with a 3.55 ERA (59 ER/149.2 IP) and 154 strikeouts in 137 relief appearances over three seasons with the White Sox (2012-14).

The White Sox 40-man roster remains at 40.
