Phillies sign McGowan

The Phillies have signed right-hander Dustin McGowan to a one-year major league contract, Senior Vice President & General Manager Ruben Amaro Jr. announced tonight.

McGowan, 33, began the 2014 season in the Toronto Blue Jays' starting rotation and went 2-2 with a 5.08 ERA in eight starts before being converted to a reliever in May. After joining the bullpen, he posted a 3.35 ERA in 45 games while holding opponents to a .215 average. He posted a 6.75 ERA in 7 appearances with the Los Angeles Dodgers this spring before being released on April 1.

Originally selected by Toronto in the first round (33rd overall) of the June 2000 draft, McGowan has a career record of 25-27 with a 4.57 ERA in 158 games (68 starts) for the Blue Jays (2005-08; 11; 13-14).
