Red Sox announce roster moves

BOSTON, MA - The Boston Red Sox today announced the following roster moves:

Right-handed pitcher Dalier Hinojosa (DAHL-yair ee-no-HOE-sah) was selected to the active major league roster from Triple-A Pawtucket. To make room for him on the 25-man and 40-man rosters, right-handed pitcher Anthony Varvaro was designated for assignment.

Left-handed pitcher Tommy Layne was recalled from Pawtucket. To make room for him on the 25-man roster, outfielder Jackie Bradley Jr. was optioned to Pawtucket following last night's game.

Hinojosa and Layne will be active for tonight's 6:10 p.m. game at Fenway Park against the Toronto Blue Jays.

Executive Vice President/General Manager Ben Cherington made the announcement.

This is the first career major league stint for the 29-year-old Hinojosa, who will wear No. 94. The right-hander began the season with Pawtucket and went 1-0 with a 3.68 ERA (3 ER/7.1 IP) and nine strikeouts in four relief appearances. In 41 games for the PawSox in 2014, his first pro campaign in the United States, the native of Isla de la Juventud, Cuba went 3-5 with three saves and a 3.79 ERA (26 ER/61.2 IP), including a 1.83 ERA (7 ER/34.1 IP) over his final 21 games of the season. Overall last year, he recorded 65 strikeouts in a team-high 61.2 innings out of the bullpen for Pawtucket and ranked third among International League relief qualifiers in opponent batting average (.183). Before signing with the Red Sox as an international free agent on October 10, 2013, Hinojosa played nine seasons for Guantanamo of Cuba's Major League Serie Nacional.

For Layne, 30, this is his second major league stint of 2015 after beginning the season on the Opening Day roster. In four appearances with the Red Sox, he produced no record and a 5.79 ERA (3 ER/4.2 IP) with four strikeouts. The left-hander was optioned to Triple-A following his last big league outing on April 12 at Yankee Stadium, and has made four appearances with the PawSox, fanning six batters in 5.0 scoreless innings while recording three saves and six strikeouts. Layne has 74 games of major league experience between the Red Sox (2014-15) and San Diego Padres (2012-13), all out of the bullpen, and has combined to go 4-3 with two saves and a 2.39 ERA (13 ER/49.0 IP) in his career. He posted a 0.95 ERA (2 ER/19.0 IP) in 30 appearances for the Red Sox last season.

Bradley, 25, was recalled to the Red Sox yesterday for his first major league stint of the season, but did not appear in last night's 11-8 loss to the Blue Jays. The left-handed batter returns to Pawtucket, where he has hit .315 (23-for-73) with nine runs, seven doubles, six RBI, and six walks in 18 games. In 164 career major league games, all with the Red Sox from 2013-14, Bradley has hit .196 (94-for-479) with 63 runs scored, 24 doubles, two triples, four home runs, 40 RBI, 41 walks, and 10 stolen bases. A supplemental first-round selection in the 2011 June Draft (40th overall), he has hit .292 (280-for-958) with 77 doubles, seven triples, 21 home runs, and 112 RBI in 250 career minor league games from 2011-15.

Varvaro, 30, made nine relief appearances in his first season with the Red Sox after being acquired in a trade with the Atlanta Braves in December. The right-hander was 0-1 with a 4.09 ERA (5 ER/11.0 IP) for Boston, allowing 14 hits and recording eight strikeouts against six walks. In parts of six major league seasons with Seattle (2010), Atlanta (2011-14), and Boston (2015), Varvaro is 7-9 with 1 save and a 3.23 ERA (66 ER/183.2 IP), recording 150 strikeouts and 70 walks in 166 appearances, all in relief. Originally selected by the Mariners in the 12th round of the 2005 June Draft, the Staten Island native is also 14-38 with 29 saves and a 4.52 ERA (235 ER/467.2 IP) in 222 career minor league appearances (49 starts).
