Red Sox announce roster moves
BOSTON, MA - The Boston Red Sox today announced the following roster moves:
- Infielder Josh Rutledge was added to the active major league roster. To make room for him, infielder Jemile Weeks was designated for assignment.
- Center fielder Mookie Betts was placed on the seven-day concussion disabled list. To fill his spot on the 25-man roster, outfielder Jackie Bradley Jr. was recalled from Triple-A Pawtucket.
Rutledge (wearing No. 30) and Bradley will be active for tonight's game against the Chicago White Sox at Fenway Park beginning at 7:10 p.m.
Executive Vice President/General Manager Ben Cherington made the announcement.
Rutledge, 26, was acquired from the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim on Monday in exchange for outfielder Shane Victorino and cash considerations. He began the 2015 season on the Angels' Triple-A Salt Lake roster, batting .274 (85-for-310) with 19 doubles, three triples, five homers, 32 RBI, 19 walks, and 45 runs scored. For the Bees, he appeared at shortstop (38 games), second base (14 games), and third base (13 games). He also played three games on rehab in the Rookie-level Arizona League this season. Originally selected by Colorado in the third round of the 2010 June Draft, the native of Alabama has appeared in 266 major league games in his career, all with the Rockies from 2012-14, hitting .259 (226-for-871) with 42 doubles, 13 triples, 19 homers, 89 RBI, 51 walks, and 126 runs scored. He has big league experience at shortstop (140 games, 127 starts), second base (82 games, 75 starts), and third base (five games, all starts). Last season, Rutledge played in a career-high 105 major league games and hit .269 (83-for-309), including a .346 average (44-for-127) with runners on base and a .319 average (23-for-72) with runners in scoring position.
Bradley, 25, is beginning his fourth major league stint of the season. The left-handed batter has appeared in 14 major league games this season, going 4-for-30 (.133) with a homer, two RBI, and four walks. Bradley has played all three outfield positions for Boston in 2015, making eight starts in right field and one start in center field. He currently ranks among International League leaders in batting average (6th, .305), on-base percentage (3rd, .382), slugging percentage (5th, .472), and OPS (3rd, .853). In 71 games for the PawSox, he has 18 doubles, nine home runs, 29 RBI, 30 walks, and 38 runs scored between 67 appearances in center field and two in right field. A first-round selection by the Red Sox in the 2011 June Draft, he has hit .193 (98-for-509) with 65 runs scored, 24 doubles, two triples, five home runs, 42 RBI, and 10 stolen bases in 178 career major league games.
Betts, 22, left last night's game after attempting to make a catch in center field. He has played 97 games for the Red Sox this season, tied with Xander Bogaerts for the team lead. The right-handed batter has hit .265 (103-for-388) while leading Boston in extra-base hits (41), stolen bases (13), and total bases (170). He has also driven in 48 runs, and has scored 52 runs. In 149 career major league games over the last two seasons, the native of Tennessee has a .274 batting average (158-for-577), 37 doubles, seven triples, 15 homers, 66 RBI, and 20 stolen bases. He was selected by the Red Sox in the fifth round of the 2011 June Draft.
Weeks, 28, made three appearances (two starts) at second base with Boston this season, batting .333 (3-for-9) with a run scored and an RBI. He has hit .207 (36-for-174) with 11 doubles, two triples, one home run, five RBI, and 20 runs scored for Pawtucket, appearing at second base (28 games), shortstop (16 games), third base (four games), and left field (one game). Weeks also appeared for Short-A Lowell at the end of June, going 2-for-7 in two contests, one at shortstop and one as designated hitter. Originally selected by the Oakland Athletics in the first round (12th overall) of the 2008 June Draft, the switch-hitter has appeared in 240 major league games between the A's (2011-13), Baltimore Orioles (2014), and Red Sox (2014-15), batting .261 (236-for-905) with 44 doubles, 17 triples, four home runs, 60 RBI, 116 runs scored, and 40 stolen bases. He has also appeared in 485 minor league games in his career, batting .278 (515-for-1,853) with 89 doubles, 32 triples, 22 home runs, 290 runs scored, 188 RBI, and 74 stolen bases.
