Pirates acquire first baseman Michael Morse from the Dodgers

The Pittsburgh Pirates today acquired first baseman Michael Morse and cash considerations from the Los Angeles Dodgers in exchange for minor league outfielder Jose Tabata. The announcement was made by Pirates Executive Vice President, General Manager Neal Huntington.

The 33-year-old Morse has a career batting average of .276 (679-for-2456) with 135 doubles, seven triples, 103 RBI and 289 runs scored in 757 games in the big leagues with Seattle (2005-08 and 2013), Washington (2009-12), Baltimore (2013), San Francisco (2014) and Miami (2015).

Morse has hit at least 13 home runs in each of his last six seasons, including a career-high 31 as a member of the Washington Nationals in 2011.

This year he hit .213 (34-for-160) with four doubles, four home runs and 12 RBI in 53 games for Miami before being traded to the Dodgers and designated for assignment yesterday.

Last year as a member of the World Champion San Francisco Giants, he hit .279 with 16 home runs and 61 RBI in 131 games. He then hit .300 (6-for-20) with a double, home run and five RBI in 10 games during the 2014 postseason, including the game-winning RBI in the fourth inning in Game Seven at Kanas City.

The Pirates will make a corresponding move on the 25-man active roster when Morse is expected to join the team on Monday.
