Mariners activate LHP Joe Beimel from 15-day disabled list

The Seattle Mariners announced today that left-handed pitcher Joe Beimel has been recalled from his rehabilitation assignment at AAA Tacoma and activated from the 15-day disabled list. Assistant General Manager Jeff Kingston made the announcement.

Beimel will be in uniform (#97) and available for tonight's 7:07 pm game at the Oakland Athletics.

Beimel, 38, was placed on the 15-day disabled list August 21, retroactive to August 20, with posterior inflammation in his left shoulder. He was on rehabilitation assignment with Tacoma Aug. 30-Sept. 3, appearing in three games and allowing 3 earned runs in 2.2 innings pitched (7 H, 2 BB, 3 K). He worked 1.0 scoreless inning last night at Salt Lake City.

With Seattle this season, Beimel is 2-1 with 1 save and a 4.78 ERA in 42 appearances. He was 2-1-1, 2.50 (10 ER, 36.0 IP) in his first 37 appearances this season, but allowed runs in his last five consecutive games prior to being placed on the DL (combined 1.2 IP, 8 H, 12 R, 10 ER, 5 HR, 3 BB, 1 HB, 0 SO) to nearly double his ERA. In all, 27 of his first 37 outings were scoreless.

Beimel signed a minor league contract with Seattle on April 2 and began the season in extended spring training before joining the Rainiers. He was 1-0 with a 0.00 ERA (0 ER, 3.2 IP) with 5 strikeouts in his first 3 appearances with Tacoma prior to being selected to Seattle.

With the Mariners last season he was 3-1 with a 2.20 ERA (11 ER, 45.0 IP) in 56 appearances while limiting left-handed hitters to a .188 batting average and a .217 on-base percentage.
