Red Sox name Mike Hazen Senior Vice President/General Manager

BOSTON, MA - The Boston Red Sox today named Mike Hazen the team's Senior Vice President/General Manager.
 
President of Baseball Operations Dave Dombrowski made the announcement.

"Over his 10 years with the Red Sox, Mike has proven to be an invaluable member of the baseball operations department," said Dombrowski. "We are thrilled to have him in this position and I'm excited to have him working with me on every aspect of baseball operations."

Hazen is amidst his 10th season in the Red Sox front office and his 15th working in Major League Baseball. Named Senior Vice President/Assistant General Manager this past January, he has played an integral role in several areas of the team's major league operations, including player acquisitions, player evaluation, contract negotiations, major league scouting, and pro scouting. From 2012-14, Hazen served as Vice President/Assistant General Manager after in 2011 being named Vice President, Player Development and Amateur Scouting, a role in which he supervised both the organization's farm system and amateur scouting department.

The 39-year-old began his tenure with the Red Sox as Director of Player Development in February 2006, following five years with the Cleveland Indians organization. He took over as Cleveland's Assistant Director of Player Development in September 2003 after coordinating and overseeing the club's major league advance scouting from 2001-02, and serving as the Indians' Assistant Director of Professional Scouting in 2003.  

Hazen, who hails from Abington, MA, played four years of varsity baseball at Princeton University, where he was a two-time All-Ivy League outfielder in 1997 and 1998. Selected by the San Diego Padres in the 31st round of the 1998 June Draft, he played two minor league seasons before joining the Indians' scouting department.

He lives in Westwood, MA with his wife, Nicole, and their four sons: Charlie, John, Teddy, and Sam. He has worked with Backpacks for New Beginnings, a non-profit organization in West Roxbury, MA dedicated to providing necessary school supplies to underprivileged children.

Since Lou Gorman succeeded Haywood Sullivan in 1984, all six people who have held the title of Red Sox General Manager (non-interim basis) have been natives of New England.
