Seattle Mariners add Manny Acta as third base coach

Acta joins Bogar, Stottlemyre Jr. & Martinez on Mariners staff

Seattle Mariners Executive Vice President & General Manager of Baseball Operations Jerry Dipoto & Manager Scott Servais announced today that former big league manager Manny Acta has been added to the Mariners Major League coaching staff as the third base coach.

Acta joins previously announced coaches Tim Bogar (Bench Coach), Edgar Martinez (Hitting Coach) and Mel Stottlemyre (Pitching Coach) on Servais' Mariners staff.

"I believe Manny will be a great addition to our staff," Servais said. "I've known him for over 25 years, since we were teammates in 1989. His experience as a Major League third base coach and manager, paired with his extensive player development background, will be very valuable to me, and to our players, as we move forward."

Acta, 46, is currently in his third season as the General Manager of the Tigres del Licey in the Dominican Winter League, which included a Dominican Winter League championship during his first season (2013-14). He spent six seasons as a Major League manager with the Cleveland Indians (2010-12) & Washington Nationals (2007-09) and previously served as a third base coach with the New York Mets (2005-06) and Montreal Expos (2002-04).

Prior to his Major League coaching career, he spent 10 years in the Houston Astros player development system (1992-2001), including eight seasons as a minor league manager (1993-2000). He was the Manager of the Year in 1999 with Single-A Kissimmee in the Florida State League.

Acta served as the Manager for the Dominican Republic's entry in the inaugural World Baseball Classic in 2006, leading the team to the WBC's Final Four. He also has managerial experience in the Venezuelan Winter League with Caracas (1999-01), as well as in the Dominican Winter League with Estrellas Orientales (2002-03) and Tigres del Licey (2003-04 & 2004-05). He led Licey to a Dominican Winter League Championship and subsequently a Caribbean Series title during the 2003-04 season for which he was named Manager of the Year.

Before beginning his coaching career, he played six seasons in the Houston Astros organization (1986-1991).

Acta also served as a baseball analyst for ESPN & ESPN Deportes for two seasons (2013-14).
