A's Acquire RHP Liam Hendriks from Toronto for RHP Jesse Chavez

OAKLAND, Calif. - The Oakland A's acquired right-handed pitcher Liam Hendriks from the Toronto Blue Jays in exchange for right-handed pitcher Jesse Chavez, the club announced today. 

Hendriks was 5-0 with a 2.92 ERA in 58 relief appearances with Toronto last year. He struck out 71 batters in 64.2 innings and walked just 11 while yielding three home runs. The 26-year-old right-hander ranked fourth among American League relievers in strikeout-to-walk ratio (6.45) and eighth in fewest walks per nine innings (1.53). He allowed a .240 opponents batting average, including .207 against right-handed hitters. Hendriks pitched exclusively in relief for the first time in his career in 2015 after going 3-15 with a 5.92 ERA in 39 games, including 34 starts, over his first four seasons in the majors. He pitched for Minnesota from 2011-13 and made nine appearances with Toronto and Kansas City in 2014. The native of Australia is 8-15 with a 5.15 ERA in 97 career appearances.

Chavez went 7-15 with a 4.18 ERA and .268 opponents batting average in 30 games, including 26 starts, with the A's before going on the disabled list Sept. 16 with a fractured rib. He had the lowest winning percentage in the AL (.318) and tied for second in losses. Chavez began the season with four relief appearances but moved into the starting rotation April 23 and remained there the rest of the season. He was 4-9 with a 3.40 ERA in 19 games before the All-Star Break before going 3-6 with a 5.59 ERA in 11 starts after the break. The 32-year-old right-hander now has a 3.72 career ERA before the break compared to 5.97 after the break Chavez is 24-38 with a 4.55 ERA in 253 career appearances, including 49 starts, over parts of eight seasons in the majors.
