Statement from D-backs on passing of Mike Sgobba

D-backs President and CEO Derrick Hall made the following statement today regarding the passing of Arizona Diamondbacks pro scout Mike Sgobba.

“This is a very sad time for the Diamondbacks organization. Mike was a talented scout who cared deeply for our franchise and gave his heart and soul to the game. He was an important part of our family, and now we turn our attention to comforting his loved ones who we will shower with thoughts, prayers and wonderful memories.”

Sgobba passed away yesterday at the age of 81.

He joined the D-backs as a part-time scout in 2001 following lengthy stints with the White Sox and Athletics organizations. He became a full-time pro scout in 2003 and doubled as the Mexico coordinator through 2009.

Prior to his professional scouting career, Sgobba was the head baseball coach at Fullerton College from 1961-1985, where he compiled a 487-325-7 record and won two South Coast Conference titles before being inducted into the school’s Hall of Fame 2007. In his 24 years at the school, 120 players went on to sign professional contracts, including Major League reliever Al Hrabosky.  

Sgobba also served as a basketball official for the American Basketball Association. He attended Illinois State University, where he was a member of the football team.
