D-backs acquire Bell from Orioles

PHOENIX — The Arizona Diamondbacks announced they have acquired infielder Josh Bell from the Baltimore Orioles for a player-to-be-named, according to D-backs’ Executive Vice President & General Manager Kevin Towers.

Bell, 25, was hitting .094 (3-for-32) with 2 doubles, a homer and 3 RBI in 9 games at Triple-A Norfolk. Over parts of 2 seasons with the Orioles, he has batted .200 (44-for-220) with 5 doubles, 3 home runs and 18 RBI in 79 games. Defensively, he has seen action at third base (71 games), left field (1 game) and right field (1 game). In his 71 games at third base, he has a .954 fielding percentage, committing 7 errors in 151 total chances.

In 2011 with the Orioles, he hit .164 (10-for-61) with 6 RBI in 26 games. In 101 games with Norfolk, he hit .253 (100-for-395) with 12 doubles, 2 triples, 19 homers and 57 RBI.

Bell was acquired by the Orioles from the Los Angeles Dodgers on July 30, 2009, with right-handed pitcher Steve Johnson in exchange for left-handed pitcher George Sherrill. Bell was originally drafted by the Dodgers in the fourth round of the 2005 First-Year Player Draft.

The D-backs 40-man roster is now at 39 players.
