Padres Place James Darnell and Tim Stauffer on 15-day DL and recall RHP Nick Vincent From Triple-A Tucson
The San Diego Padres today announced they have placed infielder James Darnell on the 15-day disabled list with a subluxation of the left shoulder, right-handed pitcher Tim Stauffer on the 15-day disabled list (retroactive to May 15) with a right elbow sprain and recalled right-handed pitcher Nick Vincent from Triple-A Tucson. In addition, left-handed pitcher Eric Stults, claimed off waivers from the Chicago White Sox, has reported to San Diego. Executive Vice President/General Manager Josh Byrnes made the announcements.
Vincent, 25, has appeared in three games so far with Triple-A Tucson. A native of Poway, Calif. and graduate of Ramona High School (CA), he was signed by the Padres as an 18th-round selection in the 2008 First-Year Player Draft and was selected to the club’s 40-man roster this past offseason. The right-hander also attended Palomar Junior College and Long Beach State University before joining the Padres organization. Last season for Double-A San Antonio, he went 8-2 with a 2.27 ERA (20 ER/79.1 IP) over 66 relief outings.
Stults, 32, made two appearances (one start) for the White Sox this year, allowing two runs in 6.2 innings of work (2.70 ERA). Originally signed by the Los Angeles Dodgers as a 15th-round selection in the 2002 First-Year Player Draft, he has gone 8-10 with a 4.84 ERA (88 ER/163.2 IP) in 43 games (25 starts) over parts of six Major League seasons with the Dodgers (2006-09), Colorado Rockies (2011) and White Sox (2012).
Darnell, 25, has hit .235 (4-for-17) with a home run in seven games for the Padres this year. He was recalled from Triple-A Tucson on May 11 for his first stint with San Diego this year. In 31 games with Triple-A Tucson this season, he has split his time between third base and left field, hitting .267 (31-for-116) with six doubles, seven home runs, 21 RBI and 22 runs scored. Over parts of five minor league seasons in the Padres organization, he has hit .299 (437-for-1460) with 101 doubles, seven triples, 63 home runs, 254 RBI and 244 runs scored in 392 games.
Stauffer, 29, was reinstated from the disabled list on May 14, making his first start of the season that day against the Washington Nationals at Nationals Park. The right-hander began the season on the DL with a strained right elbow. Over three rehabilitation starts between Triple-A Tucson (one start) and Single-A Lake Elsinore (two starts), he went 0-1 with a 1.72 ERA (3 ER/15.2 IP).
