A’s Reinstate McCarthy from Disabled List; Option Barton to Sacramento

The Oakland A’s reinstated right-handed pitcher Brandon McCarthy from the disabled list and optioned first baseman Daric Barton to Triple-A Sacramento, the team announced today. McCarthy is scheduled to start today’s game against Kansas City.

McCarthy is 3-3 with a 2.95 ERA in nine starts with the A’s, including 3-0 with a 2.43 ERA over his past four starts. He has allowed a .271 opponents batting average, which includes a .219 mark against right-handed hitters and .175 with runners in scoring position. McCarthy was placed on the 15-day disabled list May 20 retroactive to May 18 with a strained right shoulder. It was his seventh career stint on the disabled list, his second in two seasons with the A’s.

Barton was batting .198 with one home run and four RBI in 37 games. He was one of six qualifying first basemen in the majors not to commit an error this season. Barton began the season on the 15-day disabled list with a strained right shoulder and was reinstated April 9 after a four-game rehab with Sacramento.
