Mets make four roster moves; medical update on Jonathon Niese

The New York Mets today announced the club selected the contract of Chris Young from Buffalo (AAA) of the International League and returned righthanded pitcher Miguel Batista from his rehabilitation assignment and reinstated him from the 15-Day Disabled List. In order to make room on the active roster, the team placed righthanded pitcher Ramon Ramirez on the 15-Day Disabled List, retroactive to May 31, and designated righthanded pitcher Jack Egbert for assignment.

Young, 33, went 1-0 with a 1.88 ERA (five earned runs/24.0 innings) in four starts for the Mets last season before undergoing season-ending surgery to repair a tear in the anterior capsule of his right shoulder on May 16 of last year. Young signed a minor league contract on March 26, 2012

The 6-10, 262-pound native of Dallas, TX, appeared in four minor league games this year. He went 1-0 with a 3.18 ERA (six earned runs/17.0 innings) in three games, all starts, for St. Lucie of the Florida State League before making one start for Buffalo (AAA) of the International League. The righthander tossed 6.0 scoreless innings in a no-decisons for the Bisons on May 31 vs. Columbus.

Batista, 41, went 1-1 with a 3.95 ERA (12 earned runs/27.1 innings) in 13 games, four starts, for the Mets before a lower back strain forced him to the Disabled List on May 20. The righthander made one start for Binghamton (AA) of the Eastern League as part of his rehabilitation assignment, suffering the loss on May 30 at Reading after allowing five runs, four earned, in 7.0 innings.

Ramirez, 30, is 2-1 with one save and a 4.78 ERA (14 earned runs/26.1 innings) in 22 games this year.

Egbert, 29, appeared in one game for the Mets, recording two outs on May 28 vs. Philadelphia

Jonathon Niese was examined in New York yesterday for an accelerated heartbeat, a condition he experienced on Sunday and has experienced on other occasions. At a future time, probably in the off season, Jonathon will undergo a minimally invasive procedure to correct the condition. In the meantime, he is cleared to pitch.
