Rockies make seven slections in first five rounds of MLB Draft

Rockies Have Taken Three Pitchers, One Catcher, One Infielder and Two Outfielders Thus Far in Draft

The Colorado Rockies have made seven selections through the first five rounds of the Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft. The Rockies will make 10 more selections in rounds 6-15 of the draft today. The draft will conclude with rounds 16-40 tomorrow, beginning at 10:00 a.m. MDT.

Overall in the draft, the Rockies have selected three pitchers, one catcher, one infielder, and 2 outfielders.

Max White, OF: Rockies second round selection / 73rd overall out of Williston High School in Florida

White, 18, 6-foot-2 and 175 pounds, is an outfielder from Williston High School in Williston, FL. In his senior season at Williston, White hit .407 (33-for-81) with 4 doubles, 5 triples, 5 home runs, 24 RBI and 34 stolen bases. White was rated the 111th-best prospect in the draft by Baseball America and the 19th-best prospect from the state of Florida. The University of Florida signee was also rated the 24th-best outfielder in the draft by Baseball America

Tom Murphy, C: Rockies third round selection / 105th overall out of the University of Buffalo

Murphy, 21, 6-foot-1 and 225 pounds, is a catcher from the University of Buffalo. In his junior season at Buffalo, Murphy hit .311 (68-for-219) with 20 doubles, 4 triples, 13 home runs and 51 RBI in 56 games for the Bulls. The catcher had a .616 slugging percentage and a .396 on-base percentage in 2012. The 13 home runs set the University of Buffalo single-season home run record. Murphy was rated the 65th-best player in the draft by Baseball America, as well as the top player from the state of New York. He was also rated the fifth-best catcher in the draft by Baseball America. Murphy was a first team All-MAC selection in 2012.

 

Ryan Warner, RHP: Rockies third round supplemental selection / 128th overall out of Pine Creek High School in Colorado Springs, CO

Warner, 18, 6-foot-7 and 185 pounds, is a right-handed pitcher from Pine Creek High School in Colorado Springs, CO. Warner is the first high school player from the state of Colorado selected in the 2012 First-Year Player Draft. The right-handed pitcher was an All-Colorado Player as well as the Gatorade State Player of the Year during his 2012 season at Pine Creek. Warner went 7-1 with a 2.18 ERA (51.1 ip, 19 er), with just 16 walks and 89 strikeouts for the state-semifinalist Pine Creek baseball team.

Seth Willoughby, RHP: Rockies fourth round selection / 138th overall out of Xavier University

Willoughby, 21, 6-foot-2 and 190 pounds, is a right-handed pitcher from Xavier University in Cincinnati, OH. Willoughby was originally a two-way player for Xavier before being moved strictly to relief. In his Junior season at Xavier, Willoughby went 2-1 with 12 saves, a 1.01 ERA (35.2 ip, 4 er), 12 walks and 44 strikeouts in 25 games, all in relief, for the Musketeers. Willoughby was rated the 115th-best prospect in the draft by Baseball America, as well as the 2nd-best player overall from the state of Ohio by the same publication. Willoughby was named to the second-team All-Atlantic 10 team as well as academic All-Conference honors in his Junior season in 2012.

Matthew Wessinger, INF: Rockies fifth round selection / 168th overall out of St. Johns University

Wessinger, 21, 5-foor-11 and 180 pounds, is a middle infielder from St. Johns University in New York. In his senior season at St. Johns, Wessinger has batted .353 (84-for-238) with 13 doubles, 1 triple, 6 home runs and 47 RBI in 61 games for the Super-Regional Bound Red Storm. Wessinger has also stolen 34 bases in 36 attempts and drawn 34 walks. His .353 batting average and .442 on-base percentage both led St. Johns in 2012. Wessinger was named to the Big-East All-Conference second team in 2012.
