Todd Frazier of the Cincinnati Reds voted National League Rookie of the Month for August

Cincinnati Reds infielder Todd Frazier has been voted National League Rookie of the Month for August.

Frazier becomes the fifth Reds player to win the award, joining Adam Dunn (August 2001), Austin Kearns (May 2002), Josh Hamilton (April 2007) and Joey Votto (September 2008).

In 30 contests during August, Frazier collected a Major League rookie-best 25 RBI and 36 hits while leading all N.L. rookies (and ranking second in the Majors) with a .330 batting average, .393 on-base percentage and 19 runs scored. His six home runs and .587 slugging percentage ranked second among N.L. rookies. Frazier’s performance helped the Reds to 19 wins during the month, tying the Washington Nationals and Texas Rangers for the most in the Major Leagues. Frazier paced the N.L. Central leaders in games played, hits and batting average during the month, ranked second in runs scored and third in slugging. On August 28th, the 26-year-old collected two hits, including a two-run triple in the top of the eighth inning, helping the Reds secure a 5-2 victory over the Arizona Diamondbacks at Chase Field. On August 15th, Frazier tied a career high (done five times) with a three-hit performance. The Point Pleasant, New Jersey native singled, doubled, homered and swiped a bag while scoring two runs en-route to a 6-1 victory over the visiting New York Mets. The three-hit effort was one of 10 multi-hit games Frazier logged during the month. On August 10th, the Rutgers product went 3-for-4 with a career-high four RBI, leading the way to a 10-8 win over the Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field. Frazier, who was selected by the Reds in the first round (34th overall) of the
2007 First-Year Player Draft, is currently hitting .292 (105-for-360) in 109 games on the season. His 62 RBI lead all N.L. rookies while his 18 homers rank second.

Other rookies receiving votes included Colorado’s Wilin Rosario (.304, 21 H, 4 2B, 7 HR, 17 RBI, 16 R, .667 SLG, .367 OBP) and Adam Ottavino (3-0, 1.14 ERA, 21 SO, 23.2 IP); and Matt Harvey (2-2, 3.19 ERA, 31 SO, 31.0 IP) of the Mets.

The National League Rookie of the Month for August 2012, Todd Frazier, will receive a specially designed trophy, suitably engraved, to commemorate his performance.
