Phillies sign Mike Adams

Free agent right-hander Mike Adams signed a two-year, $12 million contract with the Phillies, Senior Vice President & General Manager Ruben Amaro Jr. announced today.  The contract includes a vesting/club option for 2015.

Adams, 34, spent last season with Texas where he went 5-3 with one save and a 3.27 ERA in 61 appearances.  He finished second on the Rangers staff in appearances and ranked tied for ninth among American League relievers in wins.  Forty-seven of Adams’ 61 appearances were scoreless and he held opponents to a .224 batting average with runners in scoring position.

The Corpus Christi, Texas native missed the tail end of the 2012 season due to injury and had surgery for thoracic outlet syndrome in October.

Since 2009, among all major league relievers with a minimum of 200.0 innings pitched, Adams has posted the lowest ERA (1.84) and ranks first in holds (112) and third in opponent’s batting average (.193).  In his 243 career appearances against National League clubs, he has posted a 1.97 ERA with 257 strikeouts and 74 walks in 251.0 innings.

A veteran of eight major league seasons, Adams has gone 18-15 with four saves and a 2.28 ERA in 207 games between Milwaukee (2004-06), San Diego (2008-11) and Texas (2011-12). He was originally signed by the Brewers as a non-drafted free agent on May 15, 2001.
