White Sox agree to terms with reliever Matt Lindstrom

CHICAGO – The Chicago White Sox and right-handed reliever Matt Lindstrom have agreed to terms on a one-year, $2.8-million contract which includes a club option for 2014.
 
Under terms of the agreement, Lindstrom will receive $2.3 million in 2013, while the Sox hold a $4-millon club option for 2014, which has a $500,000 buyout.
 
Lindstrom, 32, went 1-0 with a 2.68 ERA (14 ER/47.0 IP) and 40 strikeouts over 46 combined games with Baltimore and Arizona last season.  He began 2012 with the Orioles, going 1-0 with a 2.72 ERA (11 ER/36.1 IP) in 34 games before being traded to the Diamondbacks on August 26 in exchange for left-handed pitcher Joe Saunders and a player to be named later.  Lindstrom owned a 2.53 ERA (3 ER/10.2 IP) and did not factor in a decision over 12 appearances with Arizona.
 
"Matt's addition helps solidify our bullpen with a power arm and a veteran presence," said Rick Hahn, White Sox senior vice president/general manager.  "He has excelled in many different bullpen roles during his career, and we are excited to add him to our strong group of relievers."
 
The 6-foot-3, 220-pounder posted a 0.37 ERA (1 ER/24.1 IP) at home last season and was one of just 15 pitchers in baseball to appear in at least 45 games without suffering a loss.
 
Lindstrom has gone 13-15 with a 3.64 ERA (132 ER/326.0 IP), 45 saves and 263 strikeouts over six major-league seasons with Miami (2007-09), Houston (2010), Colorado (2011), Baltimore (2012) and Arizona (2012).  His 23 saves for the Astros in 2010 ranked 12th in the National League.
 
Lindstrom originally was drafted by the New York Mets in the 10th round of the 2002 First-Year Player Draft.
 
With the move, the White Sox 40-man roster is at 40.
